This project is jointly funded by Research Experiences for Undergraduates Sites, the Established Program to Stimulate Competitive Research (EPSCoR), and Human-Centered Computing.

This award reflects the National Science Foundation's statutory mission and has been deemed worthy of support through evaluation using the Foundation's intellectual merit and broader impacts review criteria.

    • Accessible via the NSF Education & Training Application site.

    • Application period: October 16th, 2024 through 11:59PM (Eastern Time) on Friday, January 31st, 2025.

    • Required Materials:

      • Personal statement describing applicant's interest in digital humanities and how they see this REU opportunity advancing their future education and career; length of approximately 800 words.

      • An updated resume or CV in PDF format.

      • An updated college transcript in PDF format.

      • One letter of recommendation.

    • Check-in: Tuesday, May 27th, 2025

    • First day: Wednesday, May 28th, 2025

    • End-of-program Research Symposium: Thursday, July 17th, 2025

    • Check-out: Friday, July 18th, 2025

    • Applicant is currently enrolled in an associate’s or bachelor’s degree program.

    • Applicant is a U.S. Citizen, U.S. Nationals, or Permanent Resident.

    • Applicant anticipates graduation either in or after December 2025.

      • Note: Those graduating from an Associates program in spring 2025 and entering a Bachelors program in fall 2025 are permitted to apply.

    • Applicant has an interest in digital humanities.

    • Applicant has a 3.0 or greater cumulative GPA.


2025 End-of-Program Research Symposium

The Mapping Freedom National Science Foundation - Research Experience for Undergraduates, will host its end-of-program Research Symposium:

On Thursday, July 17th, 2025 — 1:00 to 5:00 PM (CT)

During the event, the program’s research participants will present their findings discovered during the Summer 2025 Mapping Freedom NSF-REU. A reception with light refreshments will be available in the Liberal Arts Building Atrium during the presentations and intermission. This event is free and welcome to the public.

Visitors must obtain a visitor’s parking permit in order to park on the Southern Miss campus.
